Front Fill Done Right: JBL Control 23-1 Installation at Seminole Ridge Community High School
Share
As part of a broader upgrade to the auditorium sound system at Seminole Ridge Community High School, W&L Sound Consulting was brought in to address a common but critical problem: front row coverage. The existing PA system performed well overall but left a noticeable gap in intelligibility for those seated closest to the stage. Our solution? Six JBL Control 23-1 speakers installed as front fills, backed by a clean, serviceable wiring harness.
Why Control 23-1s?
The JBL Control 23-1 is a go-to speaker for front fill work in live sound and installed AV systems. Compact, weather-resistant, and voiced for both music and speech, the 23-1 delivers 100° × 100° coverage and excellent vocal presence. These speakers provided the clarity needed for student performances, assemblies, and external presentations—without obstructing sightlines or cluttering the stage edge.
Placement Strategy
Six units were mounted evenly along the front of the stage, discreetly bracketed just under the lip. The angle of each speaker was adjusted for optimal coverage, with a slight upward tilt to project sound toward the front audience rows without spilling onto the stage.
We time-aligned each fill to the main PA using our reference mic and RTA.
The Custom Wiring Harness
Rather than daisy-chain the front fills in the field with loose splices, we pre-built a custom wiring harness to streamline installation and future serviceability. This approach kept the install clean, minimized loose wiring on stage, and simplified troubleshooting for school tech staff.
