Professional Sound Design for Dreyfoos School’s Production of "A Chorus Line"

The recent production of the iconic musical "A Chorus Line" by the Dreyfoos School of the Arts Theater Program provided a remarkable experience for both performers and attendees. Held at the prestigious Kravis Center’s intimate Persson Hall, our team expertly tackled the unique challenges of sound system design and installation in this specialized space.

Customized Audio Solutions for an Intimate Setting

To optimize sound quality for the pit orchestra within the compact Persson Hall, our technicians carefully selected microphones that would best accommodate the unique acoustics:

Shure SM81: Utilized effectively as an overhead mic for the drumset, with an additional SM81 capturing ambient sound from the pit.

Audio-Technica MB6k: Delivered clear, defined low-end response for the kick drum.

Audio-Technica MB5k: Captured detailed sound from the snare, rack, and floor tom.

The pit orchestra comprised close to 25 musicians, creating significant space constraints. This tight arrangement intensified acoustic challenges but also facilitated a cohesive, energetic performance environment. Despite these limitations, our selected microphones reliably enhanced the musicians’ performance and sound projection.

Reliable Wireless Systems for Dynamic Performances

For vocal clarity and freedom of movement, our sound team deployed a robust mix of Shure ULX-D and SLX-D wireless systems for 23 cast members. This wireless setup proved essential in the fast-paced environment of musical theater, allowing actors to deliver powerful, uninterrupted performances.

Precision Mixing with Industry-Leading Technology

An Avid Profile Venue SC48 mixer was used to manage front-of-house audio and cast vocals, providing comprehensive control across 40 audio channels. Despite the limitations due to the lack of remote control functionality, our skilled technicians efficiently navigated this challenge by maintaining close communication and rapid adjustments.

Tackling Challenges with Expertise

Working within a 220-seat intimate venue meant dealing with loud acoustics from the live instruments and the challenge of enabling the pit orchestra to clearly hear vocal cues from performers. With limited rehearsal time (only one evening), the production demanded rapid yet precise adjustments, showcasing our team’s agility and expertise in live audio production.

Creating Memorable Experiences Through Sound

Ultimately, the production was a resounding success. Our approach emphasized simplicity, ensuring clear and balanced sound that supported the intimate atmosphere of Persson Hall. The cast and production team enjoyed an enriching, professional-grade theater experience, providing invaluable insights for future projects.

Through careful planning, technical skill, and professional execution, our team delivered an exceptional audio experience, enhancing the magic and excitement of "A Chorus Line" for everyone involved.
